NAFF WINNER's report. First of all thanks to everyone who voted for
me in the NAFF race, and thanks to everyone who e-mailed me to
congratulate me on winning. It was really nice to hear "Well done"
instead of "You got this wrong in the latest Bullsheet" for a change! ; - )
I had a lovely time in Perth (managed to fit in some sight-seeing
before and after the convention) and at Swancon where I had GoH Rob
Shearman delivered *to my door* (Tehani Wessely had shanghaied him to
push a trolley of ASIM boxes for her. The woman is *shameless*!) I
got to meet & chat to Brendan Carson and his lovely wife Catherine
after years of reading Brendan's posts on the Eidolist. I also met
Satima Flaival Neist for the first time. I was constantly bumping
into DUFF winners Sue and Steve Francis, and thinking if I'd had my
wits about me earlier, I could have tried to arrange a bit of
hospitality for them when they were in Sydney (I was still in Perth
when they were in Sydney unfortunately) I saw an interesting
presentation on how land sat details help SF writers develop their
imaginary worlds by Rebecca, and got to talk to her later with her
fiancé Mikey O'Rielly, bought NAFF and DUFF trip reports, tried to
pull my weight for NAFF by selling raffle tickets for a chocolate
Easter Hamper (big thanks to Tehani Wessely for selling off the last
of the tickets, and organising the draw of the raffle for me. The
first ticket out of the box was Lucy Zinkiewicz's, but she selflessly
demanded a redraw, and the winning ticket had been bought by Blake
Battersby. I also donated a book to NAFF that was sold in the
auction. The book and raffle raised $60 for NAFF I had the chance to
meet Ju Landessee, catch up with Clare McKenna and Emma Hawkes, whom
I remember chatting to when she was NAFF delegate at Convergence 1 in
2002. Emma was doing a sterling job of running the Swancon artshow.I
played Quidditch and saw a bit of Jedi Boot camp. During an
emotionally charged presentation, Danny Oz was awarded a Silver Swan
(it was only the third time the award had been made in over 30 years
of Swancons.) I got the chance to meet up with my ASIM buddies and
spruik, and I met little Jack Raven Parker (q.v. births) who seemed
to be enjoying his first Swancon. I'd urge all fans to attend at
least *one* Swancon in their lives. Perth fans just seem to have this
amazing energy that they channel into art, craft, costuming and
running very friendly, engaging and stimulating conventions. Special
thanks to Sally Beasley, Evan and Dave Luckett for inviting me into
their home for a sumptuous farewell dinner. Sally kindly drove me to
the airport for my flight home as well. I'll be giving a fuller
commentary of my trip to Perth at livejournal. I really enjoyed being
the NAFF delegate and wonder how you wrangle getting to be Fan Guest
of Honour for a convention? I'll be posting more details of my trip
at www.edsed.livejournal.com when I've got a bit more time!
THE TERRY TIN was something else I saw (and contributed to) at
Swancon. TERRY PRATCHETT was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimers
disease late last year. He has contributed $1million towards research
into this condition. Pratchett fans around the world are endeavouring
to match this donation, anda money collected through the terry Tin at
Swancon will be contributed to this very worthy cause.
AUREALIS AWARDS JUDGES: The AA's are calling for people available to
read eligible works between April & November, 2008. they must be able
to work collaboratively with fellow judges to determine the best of
the nominations, as well as meet deadlines, and maintain
confidentiality. Some professional experience of books & writing
within the speculative genre (e.g. authors, editors, booksellers,
critics, librarians & academics) as well as enthusiastic readers and

AUSTRALIA in 2010, Australia is bidding to host the World SF
Convention (worldcon) for the 4th time in 2010. As of March 2008, we
are the only bid for the site selection vote to take place at
Denvention 3 http://www.denvention.org/, the 2008 worldcon. Although
we are unopposed, we still need your help! If you are a supporting or
attending member of Denvention 3 you can vote for the 2010 worldcon
site selection. You can also become a 2010 presupporter by visiting

due to appear in the forthcoming Macabre anthology published by
Brimstone Press, has been short listed to be produced as a film.
HOBBIT MOVIE: Sir Ian McKellen is set to play Gandalf in Peter
Jackson's movie, The Hobbit. Orlando Bloom will also make a cameo

TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS AND CULTURES (TWC) is a new international
peer-reviewed online journal that welcomes fan-related topics and seeks to
promote dialogue between the academic and fan communities. The TWC is
now accepting electronic submissions of full essays through its web
site. The first issue is expected to by published in September 08.

Science Fiction Writers of Earth (SFWOE) an international short story
competition open to any previously unpublished writer, have announced
their top 10 entries. Congratulations to South Australian writer,
Graham Parks for his achievement in being rated No 4 for his

HUGO VOTING NOW OPEN to supporting and attending members of
Denvention 3, (q.v. conventions) Snail mail and on-line voting will
be open until 1 July. The Hugo Awards ceremony will take place at
Denvention on August 9th.

DEATHS:
ARTHUR C. CLARKE: Author of 2001: A Space Oddyssey, 2010, Sands of
Mars, & Dolphin Island among many others, inventor, and also the man
credited with conceptualizing the geostationary communication
satellite, passed away 19th March 2008, aged 90.
GARRY GYGAX co-creator of D&D who regularly held annual gaming cons
in his basement in the early years, created dice with more than 6
sides & wrote the rule books for "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons"
passed away on 4th March.
Fan writer, MONICA BELL, known to many fans as Monica Mitchell,
passed away from cancer on March 15th. Monica was a well-known fan
writer in Blake's 7 fandom. She had been living in Ballarat and
Beaufort for many years. As Monica raised a lot of money for breast
cancer research, her family has requested that donations be made to
this charity instead of flowers. (Reported by Sue Bursztynski.)
BIRTHS: Jack Raven Aubrey Parker was born on 18th November, 2007. A
son for WA fans and con gurus, Sarah and James Parker. (Jack seemed
to be enjoying his first Swancon when I met him - Edwina).

August 08. Attending and supporting members of Denvention 3 can vote
for the hugos up until 1st July. Attending and supporting members of
